Sometimes the right room for a new kitchen is already in the house. Here, the original kitchen was dated and tucked into a corner, while a large, sun-filled family room went mostly unused.
So we swapped them. The family room became the new kitchen and the heart of the house, combining cooking, dining and family time in a room that was already full of light. The old corner kitchen, a poor spot for cooking, turned out to be the perfect quiet home office.
We designed the cabinets for both rooms and had them custom built.
In the new kitchen
- A coffered ceiling and lantern pendants over a generous island with seating for five
- Stone piers framing a coffee station and a beverage center
- A range wall set into an alcove of white cabinetry
- A working pantry with a stone wall and window, plus an open-shelf pantry for everyday storage
- Stained-wood mudroom lockers at the family entry
In the new office
- Stained built-ins with glass-front display cabinets and lit beadboard backs
- A built-in desk and media wall, with views out to the woods through the original windows
